Recycling PA Injection Molded Parts With or Without Glass Fibers

PA injection molded parts are utilized both with and without glass fiber. For this application a distinction is made between short and long glass fibers.

During the production of PA injection molded parts, sprue often builds up in addition to scrap. Disposing of these involves work and costs. That is why many companies recycle their production scrap at the point of production and feed it back into the injection molding machine.

Recycling PA injection molded parts gently with ISEC evo

The PURE LOOP ISEC evo machine is particularly suited to plastics recycling. Depending on the application, high refeeding quotas are achieved when recycling PA injection molded parts using PURE LOOP technology, without compromising the quality of the end product.

The ISEC evo is flexible, easy to operate and can process a wide range of materials of different shapes and sizes. The patented double feed ram system, the single shaft shredder and the conical transition ensure that the extruder is filled uniformly.

The recycling machine offers the following benefits when recycling PA injection molded parts:

  • High wear resistance
  • Significantly lower noise level
  • Length of the glass fibers is preserved. For example: In the production of injection molded parts filled with glass fiber from pellets +25 % glass fiber content (fiber length 450 µm), the fiber length is reduced to approx. 320 µm. If these injection molded parts are then repelletized using the ISEC evo, the fiber length remains at approx. 300 µm.
  • The same applies to injection molding feedstock from the electronics industry: Tests show that there is little degradation of flame retardants.
  • The ISEC evo recycling machine is equipped with a melt filter, which also acts as a safety filter: the guaranteed fine level of filtration removes impurities - unlike grinding processes without a filter - so that the downstream injection molding process is protected.

Wear resistance of the ISEC evo 

The ISEC evo machine offers impressive wear resistance. This is particularly important for processing demanding materials containing glass fibers. As a result, the abrasion of the knives inside the extruder is reduced.

ISEC evo technology offers you special wear protection for the shredder knives and cutting chamber, extruder screw and barrel as well as pelletizer and conveying system, including:

  • High quality carbide knives and protected barrel
  • Shaft in wear-resistant design up to GF material with detonation coating using tungsten carbide powder
  • Special treatment of the screw flights to increase service life

Recycling PA injection molded parts: repelletizing vs. grinding

The most common method used to recycle PA injection molded parts is still grinding. However, this is not a good strategy. When production scrap is ground, dust is produced in the process. When the regrind material is returned to the injection molding machine, the dust is also returned with it. The dust then sticks, overheats and turns into soot particles. These cause surface blemishes on the injection molded parts - a reduction in quality that can be avoided if a suitable recycling process is used instead.
